Cool Plate (Smooth PEI)

The Cool Plate is a smooth PEI plate that gives a glossy and even bottom surface on prints. It is included as the standard plate with most Bambu Lab printers.

Properties

  • Surface: Smooth, glossy bottom surface on prints
  • Material: PEI (Polyetherimide) coating on a spring steel plate
  • Max bed temperature: 90 °C

Best suited for

  • PLA (all variants) — without glue stick
  • PLA+ — without glue stick
  • PLA Silk — without glue stick
  • PLA-CF — without glue stick

Use with caution

PETG — always use glue stick

PETG adheres extremely strongly to smooth PEI. Without glue stick, you risk tearing off the PEI coating from the plate when removing the print. Always use glue stick as a barrier, or choose the Engineering Plate.

Maintenance

After each print

  • Let the plate cool to room temperature (40 °C or lower) before removing the print
  • PLA releases from the plate on its own at 25–30 °C
  • Flex the plate gently to release stubborn prints

Weekly cleaning

Wipe the plate with isopropanol (IPA, 70–99%):

1. Apply IPA to a clean, lint-free paper towel (don't spray directly on plate)
2. Wipe the surface in one direction
3. Let dry completely (30 seconds) before the next print

For poor adhesion

  1. Wash with warm water and mild dish soap
  2. Rinse thoroughly
  3. Dry with lint-free paper
  4. Finish with an IPA wipe
Do not use acetone

Acetone dissolves the PEI coating and permanently damages the plate. Only use IPA or water/soap.

Replacing the plate

The plate is worn when:

  • The PEI coating is visibly damaged (scratches, scoring, flaking)
  • Prints no longer adhere even after thorough cleaning
  • The surface is uneven and gives a poor first layer

A Cool Plate typically lasts 200–500 prints with normal use and good maintenance.
