Build Plate Maintenance
The build plate is critical for good adhesion and successful prints. Proper cleaning and handling significantly extends its lifespan.
Cleaning
Between prints (IPA)
IPA (isopropyl alcohol) is the standard method for removing grease and fingerprints:
1. Wait until the plate is below 40 °C
2. Apply IPA to a lint-free paper towel (don't spray directly)
3. Wipe the surface in circular motions
4. Let dry for 30–60 seconds
5. Do not touch the surface afterward (grease from fingers)
Avoid fingerprints
Grease from fingers is the most common cause of poor adhesion. Always handle the plate by the edges, or use disposable gloves.
Deep cleaning (water and soap)
Perform monthly or after using glue stick:
- Warm water (30–50 °C) with mild dish soap
- Scrub gently with a soft cloth or sponge (not the scrubbing side)
- Rinse thoroughly under running water
- Dry with lint-free paper towel
- Let air dry completely, or finish with an IPA wipe
After glue stick
Glue stick residue must be washed off after printing:
- Soak the plate in lukewarm water for 2–3 minutes
- Glue stick dissolves easily in water
- Rinse and dry as described above
Preventing damage
Removing prints correctly
- Let cool — most materials release on their own at 30–40 °C
- Flex the plate — the spring steel plate bends easily; press down the edge to release
- Never use sharp objects — knives and scrapers scratch and destroy the PEI coating
Do not use metal scrapers
A metal scraper will scratch the PEI coating and drastically reduce the plate's lifespan. Use the flex technique or a plastic scraper if necessary.
Temperature
- Don't place a cold plate on a hot bed — be careful with thermal shock
- Don't spray cold IPA on a hot plate — same reason
When should the plate be replaced?
Replace the plate when:
- The PEI coating is visibly damaged (tears, flaking, deep scratches)
- Prints no longer adhere even after thorough cleaning and deep cleaning
- The surface is deformed or uneven
- The center section has become smooth and worn (Engineering Plate)
Typical lifespan
| Plate | Normal use | Intensive use |
|---|---|---|
| Cool Plate | 200–500 prints | 100–200 prints |
| Engineering Plate | 300–700 prints | 200–400 prints |
| High Temp Plate | 200–400 prints | 100–200 prints |
| Textured PEI | 300–600 prints | 200–300 prints |
Storage
Store unused plates:
- In the original protection or a flat folder
- Avoid direct sunlight (UV degrades PEI)
- Avoid dusty environments — dust settles in the texture and reduces adhesion
